guide to
the four c's
When it comes to diamonds, there are four defining factors that determine its quality: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. These characteristics will directly impact the lustre, sparkle and overall look of your diamond.
cut
A diamond’s cut refers to the balance of proportion, polish and symmetry to maximise the stone’s light performance. This is arguably the most important of the four C's, as the cut has the most significant effect on the diamonds appearance and sparkle.
colour
This refers to the natural colour or lack of colour visible within a diamond, not the coloured flashes of light the diamond emits when it moves, known as fire. Diamond Colour is graded alphabetically from D (Colourless) to Z (Light Yellow).
At EF Studios we work with D and E coloured laboratory diamonds, ensuring the brightest and best quality stones.
clarity
Clarity refers to how clear a diamond is, grading its purity according to the number of imperfections or inclusions present within the stone.
Our EF Studios diamonds range between the VVS1-VS1. We strive to only work with the most exquisite diamonds that deliver on our commitment of balancing quality and affordability.
carat
Carat (ct.) refers to the specialised unit of measurement used to weigh a diamond and other gemstones.

Lab-Grown Diamonds
Curious about lab-grown diamonds and whether they’re the right fit for your next piece of fine jewellery? Our guide covers everything you need to know, helping you make an informed choice with confidence and clarity.
What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab diamonds are genuine diamonds, created in a controlled environment using cutting-edge technology to replicate the high-pressure, high-temperature conditions of the Earth’s crust. Chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds, they deliver the same brilliance and durability. Lab diamonds are sustainable, reducing the environmental and ethical concerns associated with traditional diamond mining.
How Lab Diamonds Are Made?
There are two primary methods used to create lab-grown diamonds: High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).
- HPHT involves exposing carbon to intense heat and pressure, mimicking natural diamond formation.
- CVD, a newer method, involves placing a carbon-rich gas mixture in a chamber with a small diamond seed, where it gradually crystallises layer by layer.
Both techniques result in high-quality diamonds, allowing for precision in crafting stones with desired characteristics.
Lab vs. Natural Diamonds: Key Differences
While lab and mined diamonds look identical, they differ in origin and environmental impact. Lab diamonds provide:
- Affordability: Typically 30-40% less than mined diamonds of similar quality.
- Environmental Responsibility: Controlled production results in a smaller carbon footprint.
- Conflict-Free Assurance: Lab diamonds are free from human rights and environmental issues sometimes tied to mining.
These benefits make lab diamonds a sustainable choice without compromising on quality or beauty.
Why Choose Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are more than just a sustainable choice; they’re a statement of values. Here’s why they’re a growing favourite for engagement rings and bespoke jewellery:
- Sustainable and Ethical: Unlike mined diamonds, lab-grown diamonds have a significantly lower environmental impact. Every diamond we use is created with minimal environmental footprint, offering a guilt-free alternative to traditional gems.
- Guaranteed Quality: EF Studios’ lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same 4Cs scale (Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat) as natural diamonds. Our stones offer the same fire, brilliance, and durability, ensuring that your piece remains a symbol of your love for years to come.
- Affordable Luxury: Because they aren’t subject to the limitations and ethical concerns of mining, lab-grown diamonds are often more affordable, allowing you to choose larger, higher-quality stones for your custom jewellery without the higher price tag.

Welcome to EF Studios' Diamond Guide! Whether you’re shopping for an engagement ring or simply want to learn more about diamonds, this guide will help you navigate the sparkling world of lab-grown diamonds.
What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds that are created in a controlled environment using advanced technology. They possess the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds but are made through two main processes: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). This means that they have the same brilliance and durability, making them a stunning choice for fine jewellery.
The Benefits of Choosing Lab-Grown Diamonds
-
Ethical and Sustainable: Lab-grown diamonds are produced without the environmental degradation associated with traditional diamond mining. Choosing lab-grown contributes to ethical practices in the jewellery industry.
-
Cost-Effective: On average, lab-grown diamonds are 20-40% less expensive than their natural counterparts. This allows you to invest in a larger or higher-quality stone without breaking the bank.
-
Wide Variety: Lab-grown diamonds are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colours, providing a range of options to suit every style.
The 4 Cs of Diamonds
When selecting a diamond, it’s essential to understand the 4 Cs:
-
Cut: This refers to how well a diamond has been shaped and faceted. The cut affects the diamond's brilliance and sparkle.
-
Colour: Lab-grown diamonds come in various colours, ranging from colourless to shades of yellow and even fancy colours like pink and blue. The less colour a diamond has, the more valuable it tends to be.
-
Clarity: This measures the presence of internal or external flaws (inclusions and blemishes). Lab-grown diamonds can achieve exceptional clarity, often surpassing natural diamonds.
-
Carat Weight: This denotes the size of the diamond. Larger diamonds are rarer and typically more valuable.
Caring for Your Lab-Grown Diamond
To maintain the beauty of your lab-grown diamond, it’s crucial to care for it properly:
-
Cleaning: Use a soft brush with mild soap and water to clean your diamond regularly. Avoid harsh chemicals.
-
Storage: Store your diamond jewellery in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratches.
Common Misconceptions
There are several myths surrounding lab-grown diamonds. Let’s debunk some of the most common ones:
-
Myth: Lab-grown diamonds are fake.
Fact: Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They are just created in a lab instead of being mined from the earth. -
Myth: Lab-grown diamonds have less value.
Fact: While they are generally less expensive, lab-grown diamonds hold significant value and are a smart investment.
